Senator Obama Pledges Continued Efforts To Press Turkey To Acknowledge Armenian GenocideWASHINGTON–Democratic Presidential Candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) pledged to continue his efforts to press Turkey to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide, in a strongly worded statement submitted Tuesday to the Congressional Record marking the 93rd Anniversary of this crime against humanity, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).
The statement by the Senator, who has been endorsed in the Democratic primaries by the ANCA, was one of 30 remarks by Senators and Representatives including those by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden (D-DE), House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD). By Learning from Mistakes Armenia Will Forge New Policies, Says Presidential AideGLENDALE–Armenia’s Presidential Advisor Vigen Sargsyan Wednesday told Horizon Television, in an exclusive interview, that Armenian authorities are ready to learn lessons from recent developments in Armenia and forge new political policies.
Sargsyan is scheduled to represent Armenia’s government at a hearing Wednesday organized by the Congressional Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe–the so-called Helsinki Commission–which will address the aftermath of Armenia’s presidential elections.
During the interview with Horizon TV’s Alisa Petrossian, Sargsyan also emphasized that the lessons learned from the post-election unrest should serve as a lesson for each Armenian around the world to come together and unite behind the Republic of Armenia, since unfriendly nations–enemies–have used the unrest to threaten Armenia’s national security and hinder its image internationally. Foreign and Defense Ministers AppointedYEREVAN (Presidential News Office)–Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian issued two decrees Monday appointing Edward Nalbandian and Major General Seyran Ohanian as Foreign Minister and Defense Minister, respectively.
Edward Nalbandian was Armenia’s ambassador to France, Vatican, Israel and Andorra under the Robert Kocharian administration.
Since June, 2007, Seyran Ohanian served as Chief of Staff of Armenia’s Armed forces and was the first deputy defense minister.
Armenia’s newly formed political coalition on Friday was still in talks over the distribution of roles in the emerging Cabinet, with its newly appointed head promising the negotiations would be completed by the end of the week. Read more

Catholicos Karekin II Meets With Karabakh PresidentETCHMIADZIN (Armenpress)–His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians congratulated Nagorno-Karabakh Republic President Bako Sahakian on being elected president of Karabakh Monday during the Karabakh President’s first visit to the Holy See of Etchmiadzin since being elected.
The Catholicos wished Sahakian success in the governing the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Sahakian meanwhile expressed his gratitude to the Catholicos and said that he was very glad they had the opportunity to meet. Read more

ANC-PAC Endorses Armenian American Woman Running For CongressLOS ANGELES–The Armenian National Committee-Political Action Committee has endorsed Jackie Speier in her campaign to serve as the next U.S. Representative for California’s 12th Congressional District. Speier, who is of Armenian descent, has served as a County Supervisor, State Assemblymember and State Senator in a distinguished career that has spanned over three decades. Since 1980, California’s 12th Congressional District has been represented by Tom Lantos (D-CA), who recently announced that he would not seek reelection in 2008 due to a diagnosis of cancer. Marseilles Hamazkayin School Receives 1.35 Million Euro GrantThe Hamazkayin Central Executive Tuesday announced that its school in Marseilles, France was granted 1.35 million euros from the Bouche du Rhone regional authorities.
The grant was announced during a local Armenian community event by the regional council chairman Jean-Noel Guerin.
The Hamazkayin Central Executive also announced that due to the diligence and perseverance of the school’s administration and faculty, the secondary level of the Marseilles school has signed a cooperation agreement with the regional government. The contract stipulates that beginning the next school year, the French Education Ministry will gradually provide for a substantial portion of the budget. Read more

Western Prelacy Hosts Open House for Elected OfficialsLA CRESCENTA–The Western Prelacy Saturday hosted an open house for Southern California elected officials under the auspices of Western Prelate Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian and with the participation of members of Prelacy parishes and councils, representatives of sister organizations, and benefactors.
The open house was organized by the Western Prelacy Outreach Committee and the Armenian National Committee Western Region with the purpose of more closely familiarizing California elected officials with the work that is carried out at the Prelacy and to provide an opportunity for our community to meet with their representatives.
