Gul Meets Sarkisian, Greeted by Protesters

YEREVAN (Combined Sources)–Turkish President Abdullah Gul met with his Armenian counterpart after he arrived in Yerevan Saturday. Gul was met at Yerevan’s airport by Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian, then was whisked off to a meeting with Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian .

Thousands of supporters of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation greeted Gul’s motorcade from Yerevan airport with placards reading “No to genocide” and “Accept the truth.” The party continued its protest with a candlelight vigil at the Dzidzernagapert Memorial monument. Read more

Russia Pledges to Recognize AbkhaziaMOSCOW, ABKHAZIA (Combined Sources)–Georgia’s region of Abkhazia Wednesday declared that it would ask Russia to recognize its independence in a move that threatens to trigger a new crisis in the Caucasus.

The Abkhaz parliament said that it would send a formal request for recognition to President Dmitri Medvedev in Moscow Thursday.

“The people of Abkhazia intend to ask the Russian leadership to recognise Abkhazia,” said the Deputy Speaker of Abkhazia’s Parliament, Vyacheslav Tsugba.

The Speaker of Russia’s upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, said that legislators were ready to support the request and to extend recognition to South Ossetia too. Read more

Armenia, Turkey ‘In Secret Talks’YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–Armenia and Turkey have held confidential negotiations to discuss a new opening for the normalization of their strained relations, a leading Turkish newspaper reported on Friday.

A senior US official, meanwhile, expressed hope that Turkish President Abdullah Gul will accept his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarkisian’s invitation to arrive in Yerevan on September 6 for a World Cup qualifier match between the two countries’ national football teams. Read more

Swedish Parliament Votes Against Genocide RecognitionSTOCKHOLM (Combined Sources)–Sweden’s parliament on Thursday voted down a resolution that would have put the country on record as recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

The vote of 245 to 37 (with 1 abstention) followed debates held in parliament on Wednesday regarding a Foreign Affairs Commission Report on Human Rights. During the discussions, five motions were forwarded calling on the Swedish Government and legislature to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide. Read more

Thousands Attend Blessing of Holy Water in AnteliasANTELIAS, Lebanon–Thousands of faithful flocked Saturday to the Monastery at the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia, where His Holiness Catholicos Aram I officiated the ceremony of blessing of Holy Water, which takes place every seven years.

On a stage at the entrance of the monastery, Catholicos Aram I began the Holy Water blessing ceremony, which was attended by representatives from all Prelacies, as well as representatives from the Holy See of Etchmiadzin and the patriarchates of Istanbul and Jerusalem. Read more
