Barack Obama Calls For Passage Of Armenian Genocide ResolutionWASHINGTON–Presidential candidate Barack Obama issued a strongly worded statement Wednesday calling for Congressional passage of the Armenian Genocide Resolution (H.Res.106 & S.Res.106), and pledging that, as president he would “recognize the Armenian Genocide, institutionalize the commemoration of this horrible crime by the federal government, and encourage its ongoing reaffirmation by the U.S. Congress,” reported the Armenian National Committee of America.
In his statement, the Senator reaffirmed his support for a strong “U.S.-Armenian relationship that advances our common security and strengthens Armenian democracy.” He also pledged to promote “Armenian security by seeking an end to the Turkish and Azerbaijani blockades, and by working for a lasting and durable settlement of the Nagorno Karabagh conflict that is agreeable to all parties, and based upon America’s founding commitment to the principles of democracy and self-determination.” Read more

Prime Time Debate: Opposition says TV campaign schedule limits reachAs candidates in the February 19 presidential election are expected to launch their campaign on public TV and radio, some representative of Armenia’s opposition already cry foul, claiming that the hours for political programming are a disadvantage.

The campaign of candidates on public radio will begin at 1.30 pm and on television, which has the largest audience in Armenia, at 5.15 pm.

Citing studies by specialists, Public Television and Radio Board Chairman Alexan Harutyunyan stated recently that the period of airing campaign ads is the prime time, because the number of audience is great at that time. “The time was chosen not without a reason. A serious study has shown that it is during this time that television and radio gather their largest audiences,” he said. Read more

There will be no second roundOn January 18 the Armenian president Robert Kocharyan visited the City Hall of Yerevan for a consultation and held a news briefing answering to several questions concerning the presidential election. With regard to the possibility of a second stage Robert Kocharyan said these rumors are put up by political forces to enable political bargains. According to Robert Kocharyan, the society determines the number of election rounds, but public polls suggest that the candidate of the government stands a chance to win the election in the first round. The reporters also asked his thoughts on Ter-Petrosyan’s statement that if the other candidates say they will win, he says he has already won. Robert Kocharyan only said that he congratulates Levon Ter-Petrosyan. By the way, with regard to his plans after leaving office, President Robert Kocharyan said he will speak about it in the period of inauguration of the next president. Read more

НО ГДЕ ВЗЯТЬ ЧИСТЫЙ ЛИСТ?
Побудительные мотивы людей, окружающих сегодня Левона Тер-Петросяна, понятны всем. Они просты и прагматичны. Прагматичны, несмотря на то, что зиждятся на иллюзиях и мифах.
Никаких реальных оснований достичь желанного у них, конечно, нет. Но разве это имеет значение, если, во-первых, однажды, вопреки логике их прежней биографии, возможностям и способностям, подобное чудо произошло и, во-вторых, если уже сам Л. Т. -П. посмел заявить о своих претензиях, то что или кто может помешать им мечтать о своих.
Кто, например, может помешать Гранту Багратяну вновь вообразить себя премьером при президенте Л. Т. -П. ? Что, согласимся, может быть логичнее? Хотя и конкурентов предостаточно, благо это виртуальные претенденты на виртуальную должность: называются в прессе главным образом лица из нынешнего ближайшего окружения Л. Т. -П. - от экс-мэра Ваагна Хачатряна до скандально известной Манушак Петросян. О шансах же родоначальника (наряду с главой тер-петросяновского клана Тельманом Тер-Петросяном) армянской олигархии Хачатура Сукиасяна и говорить нечего. Все они к тому же, в отличие от Багратяна, получили почетные “должности” в предвыборной “администрации” экс-президента, хотя главные фигуранты, безнадежно скомпрометированные в глазах народа, пока тусуются где-то на заднем плане.
